Frequently Asked Questions

The Seginus Advantage.

Q. How can I see a demo?

A. To schedule a demonstration, contact Seginus at (800) 637-1134, ext. 160, or via e-mail at info@seginusmd.com.

Q. What do I need in order to use Seginus products?

A. The only program required to utilize Seginus' software is Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0 or higher - a standard Web browser on most Windows-based computers - and the Macromedia Flash plug-in, which is usually included with Internet Explorer. (Internet Explorer and Flash Player can be installed free.)

Q. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a software-as-a-service model?

A. Applications hosted by the software vendor are accessed by the physician practices from their offices via the Internet for a monthly fee. Significant advantages for the practice are:

  • Reduction in capital cost for server and application software.
  • Reduction in cost of infrastructure maintenance and in cycle of system upgrade.
  • Reduction or elimination of cost of application updates and version upgrades.
  • Reduction in the staff's activity of routine maintenance of the infrastructure and application.
  • For multiple offices, reduction in the cost of wide area network infrastructure.
  • For true web based applications, reduction in the overall cost of infrastructure and maintenance.
  • The application can be accessed anytime from anywhere with only a web browser.
  • HIPAA mandates security and disaster prevention and recovery plans. Office administrator will no be responsible for some of these considerations, thereby reducing cost.

Consider now the disadvantages of offsite hosting:

  • Internet service fails, operation grinding to a halt.
  • Internet service slows significantly affecting efficiency of the operation.
  • Risk of data corruption or loss, considering that Internet is a big source of viruses, worms and intrusion by hackers.

Seginus has considered these disadvantages carefully and recommends the following precautions:

  • Recommends a backup Internet account, which should minimally be a dial-up account. Seginus will also provide on one computer in the office an application that will support viewing current patient and appointment information and printing a limited number of reports, such as encounter forms. The data in the computer can be updated each night. The system will not have any transaction or write capabilities.
  • Recommends ordering a higher bandwidth of the Internet service than necessary for the size of the office.

Seginus has developed a reliable batch backup and an offsite backup procedure, ensuring that in event of loss or corruption, data can be restored. Data will be as current as practically feasible.
